Do you own a smartphone?  Do you want to earn passive income?  Read on for our evaluation of McMoney, a text app that delivers passive income through your smartphone.  We’re including this evaluation in the website testing section only because it really doesn’t fit it any other categories.

What about other ways to earn extra income? Online website testing can be a good way to earn extra income. However, the challenge will be finding consistent income. So, I also suggest you try other options in addition to this one.

Another path for additional income is Mystery Shopping. You can register with multiple service providers to increase your shopping selections. Another income path could be Freelancing or Micro Jobs. Again, you can register with multiple providers so you have more diversity and income potential.

Do you have an entrepreneurial spirit? Then perhaps you want to consider starting your own online business, beginning with a website. All of these options together give you more diversity – more options for income channels. There are a lot of resources available to help you get organized.

Mobile App

McMoney
mcmoneyapp.com

The McMoney text app pays you for the passive use of your device (receiving SMS, text messages) through your service provider.  They need a variety of devices using a variety of different service providers in a lot of different countries.

NOTE: In the past, we’ve sometimes received an HTTP Error 500, “This page isn’t working.  mcmoneyapp.com is currently unable to handle this request.”  But it usually resolves itself within a few days, so keep trying.

Company behind the App

CM Telecom
www.cm.com

CM Telecom was founded in 1999 and is based in Breda, Netherlands.  The company provides an, “…all-in-one platform for communications and payment.”  They use their McMoney text app to test SMS across mobile networks around the world to ensure the networks are transferring content properly.

Better Business Bureau (BBB)

Neither McMoney nor CM Telecom is listed with the Better Business Bureau.

Pay range

We’ve found it difficult to figure out the payment structure with McMoney as it depends on your location.  You are paid per message they send to your phone but the amount varies depending upon your country of registration.  The range appears to be between $0.02 to $0.06 per message (in Canada, the pay is around $.048 per message).

Regardless of the amount, the more messages you receive, the more money you earn.  But you have no control over how many messages you receive.

Payment method

McMoney pays you through PayPal but you also have the option to donate to charity instead.

Payment frequency

McMoney doesn’t pay automatically, you need to request to cash out from your account.  When you’ve requested a cash out, the payment requests are processed on Fridays

You can only cash out when you’ve reached the minimum amount – and that minimum amount is different depending upon your country of registration.

We have seen different minimums reported ($1.00 to $6.00) but we can confirm the minimum in Canada is $5.00.

Report submission

There are no reports, no surveys, nothing!  The income from McMoney is completely passive through the app.  You install the app, register, verify your phone number, and wait for text messages.

Mobile App usability

You don’t need to interact with the app, just allow your phone to receive messages.  That said, the app does have a dashboard, registration details, and a help section.  It’s quite straight forward.

Social media

McMoney is available on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Testing Category

McMoney is a unique type of testing because you don’t need to perform any testing yourself.  Their focus is on SMS content delivery and fraud detection.

Text availability

We’ve seen reports of people in other countries receiving multiple messages per day.  However, in our experience, it’s only a few messages per week.  Now, considering you don’t have to do anything… that’s not too bad.

Tester support

McMoney has a decent help section on the app and there is a button to “Contact support” via email.

What do you need?

The requirements for McMoney are minimal:

  1. Internet – you must have a connection to receive messages
  2. Device – any Android device with cell phone / internet service can be used.  NOTE: iOS devices are not currently supported.
  3. Software – just download the McMoney app

How does it work?

  1. Download the app.  Now you might think this would be simple as you could just go to the Google Play Store.  Despite our best efforts we could not locate the app there.  Instead, we downloaded the APK: mcmoney.en.aptoide.com or www.apkmonk.com/app/com.cmtelecom.texter.  How do you work with an APK: www.androidpit.com/android-for-beginners-what-is-an-apk-file.
  2. Once you have the app, register for use.  We recommend you use the same email address you use for PayPal.
  3. Complete your profile with your country and service provider information and apply your phone number.  Be careful to enter your number in the specific format they outline.
  4. Confirm your phone number by entering the verification code sent by SMS
  5. Wait for text messages

The text messages might appear as gibberish with lots of special characters or they might even appear to contain some legitimate words.  Regardless, you can simply delete them once received.  Also, you can update your settings (under “Account”) to specify the days/times when you’re available to receive messages.

NOTE: There is an entire “Device Issues” list in the Help section.  There are particular devices that require configuration adjustments to receive messages.  The most notorious appears to be the Huawei phones.

  Recommendation

We’ve been using this for some time and while you won’t get rich with this app, it’s a no-brainer.  Set it up and let it run:

  1. Text availability – not a lot of messages received but no effort required
  2. App support – a pretty good help section in the app
  3. Pay range – the pay is very low but again, no effort required
  4. Payment – they pay as advertised
  5. Devices – Android only
