Take advantage of the gig economy – try freelancing with TaskRabbit as a contract worker!  You can set your own rates and choose which tasks you accept.  But will it pay the bills?

Freelancing company:

TaskRabbit
USA: www.taskrabbit.com
UK: www.taskrabbit.co.uk
Canada: www.taskrabbit.ca

TaskRabbit was established in 2008.  Their headquarters is in San Francisco, California.  Currently, they operate in the USA, the UK, and in Canada.

TaskRabbit is a platform that connects freelancing contract workers with local consumers for everyday tasks.  TaskRabbit offers tasks such as cleaning, moving, running errands, deliveries, home projects, and furniture assembly.  In 2017, Ikea purchased TaskRabbit but it continues to function as an independent operation.

Better Business Bureau (BBB):

TaskRabbit has been listed with the Better Business Bureau since 2011.  They’ve been accredited since 2017 and have received an A+ rating.

There were 98 complaints logged in the last three years with 41 of those within the last 12 months.  There are also 38 reviews and they’re overwhelmingly negative.

Cost to you:

App: free download
USA registration: $25 USD
UK registration: £20 GBP
Canada registration: $25 CAD

Pay range:

You actually set your own freelancing hourly rate on TaskRabbit.  But you need to be competitive with the overall rates to pick up gigs.  The rates you see on the site will vary based on your location, the types of tasks, and your level of expertise.  It also depends on the number of people available to complete the work.  A smaller worker pool can charge higher rates.

The average hourly rates:
USA: $18-45 USD
UK: £20-55 GBP
Canada: $15-40 CAD

NOTE: TaskRabbit takes a percentage of your earnings as their cut for providing the platform.  Currently, that’s 30% so it’s something to keep in mind.

Payment method:

You are paid by direct deposit, regardless of your country.  That means you must provide your bank account information when you register.

Payment frequency:

TaskRabbit freelancing pays you after each task.  Typically, it takes between three and five days for the payment to be deposited into your bank account.

Website/app usability:

We don’t have a lot of experience with this particular company.  From what we’ve tried, it does appear to be very standard to navigate the site. Both the account settings and the task board.

Social media:

TaskRabbit has a presence on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Instagram.

Task availability:

TaskRabbit does have quite a number of tasks available.  However, you are competing with all other Taskers trying to earn money.  That also means you’re competing with their rates as well.  Lower rates will often get more tasks assigned.

Tasker support:

TaskRabbit has a number of ways for freelancing workers to get assistance:

  1. Live chat – this is the fastest way to connect and is available through the app, but only during particular extended business hours
  2. Email/contact form – the email contact advertised actually provides a contact form for you to fill out.  But the response is quoted to be between three and five business days. So this is not the best choice if you need advice for a current task.
  3. Help/support centre online – there is a pretty decent knowledge base available in the support centre online

What do you need?

TaskRabbit requires freelancing contract workers to complete a detailed profile which includes:

  1. Criminal background check – you’ll need to provide appropriate credentials for the country in which you register to prove your identity.
  2. Valid bank account (chequing account) in your country
  3. Smartphone – either iOS or Android

How does it work?

Registration:

  1. You begin the registration process from the site specific to your location:
    1. USA: www.taskrabbit.com
    2. UK: www.taskrabbit.co.uk
    3. Canada: www.taskrabbit.ca
  2. From the website, in the top right corner, click on “Become a Tasker”
  3. Enter your name, email address, cell phone, and postal/zip code.  Ensure you’ve checked all the applicable checkboxes then click “Start Registration.”
  4. Confirm your personal details – including actual street address, upload a photo, add your birthdate, means of transportation, etc.
  5. Then identify all the types of tasks that interest you and the hourly rate you will charge for each task type.  The site will provide rate recommendations but you can declare whatever rate you want.  We suggest you take your time filling out the task information section.  This is your opportunity to demonstrate your worth through the experience description.
  6. Provide the necessary credentials for the criminal background check
  7. Once approved, then you’ll need to complete the Tasker info sessions and download the app

Tasker Work:

Clients post work on a task board.  You (the Tasker) can then apply to complete that work.  Or the client can also directly assign work to you based on your profile.  You then have 30 minutes to accept or decline the request.

You complete the task, the client pays you, and then the client can post a review of your work.  This helps build your reputation on the site.

Recommendation:

TaskRabbit provides freelancing gigs available to all.  Here’s our take on this:

  1. Reviews – there are a LOT of negative reviews for TaskRabbit, even though they have an A+ BBB rating.  That is often a red flag.
  2. Cost – we’re not big fans of platforms that charge you, in advance, just for registration.  Especially when there’s no guarantee you’ll be accepted on the platform nor make any money.
  3. Tasker support – they do have a lot of different ways to get support
  4. Pay range – the average range seems decent, although you may not have a consistent supply of tasks
  5. Payment:
    1. We like that you get paid after each task
    2. We’re not very keen on providing bank account information
  6. Types of tasks – almost all of these tasks take place outside of your own home.  And many of them involve you being in other people’s homes.  Are you comfortable with this?
