Trying to find a gift for your technology lover?  Check out this gift guide for a diverse list of technology items.  This list is focused primarily on gifts to be used within your home.

Technology Gifts

I’m a serious gadget lover.  If it’s related to technology of some sort then I probably want it.  Yes, I need to exercise some restraint.  Sigh.

But, I do have some discretion.  I am also very practical so I want my gift guide to deliver technology value to you.  So all of these gifts relate in some way to improved productivity or better organization.  In some cases, it’s just that using them can free up your time for other tasks.

Technology Gift Guide

Whether you call them gadgets or just technology, you’ll find an item in this gift guide to appeal to someone your list.

1. Philips SmartSleep, Sleep and Wake-up Light

Wake up more refreshed… and be more productive

Do you have trouble falling asleep at night?  This light functions in two different ways:

  1. Uses sunset simulating light to help you wind down to get to sleep at night
  2. Then in the morning, it simulates a sunrise which is more natural and less jarring than your blaring alarm clock

It’s basically LED light therapy but with a lot of bells and whistles.

It has a “RelaxBreathe” function that uses light and sound in different rhythmic patterns to help calm your breathing and let you drift off to sleep.  Very new age.  And apparently clinically proven although I could not find a link to that study.

You can charge it by USB and adjust it through a touch-screen interface.  It has built-in speakers and includes its own nature sounds.  But you can choose to connect to your phone’s music or FM radio instead.

And if you need to make a late-night visit to the bathroom (or the fridge) you can pick it up and take it with you like a night light.

Who enjoys dealing with the garbage?  It’s disgusting.

You can make it less disgusting if your trash can is motion-activated – no hands!  And this trash can lets you take it a step further and use your voice too.  Very cool.

It has multiple microphones to ensure it functions even in a loud location – like your kitchen during a family dinner!  You command it to open and it closes automatically.  Or you can tell it to close too.

If you don’t feel like talking then you can use the motion sensor.  No need to touch the lid so you reduce the germ flow.

But even if you do have to touch it, it’s made with stainless steel and has been specially coated to reduce fingerprints.  The coating finish even helps to reduce the spread of germs.

It can use regular garbage bags or you can buy the custom-fit liners made for the can.  Those liners fit perfectly over the can lip but under the lid so you can’t even see the bag.

It even comes in different colours so you can still be stylish!

3. Click and Grow Smart Garden

Grow your own herbs year-round

If you have a chef to buy for (or someone who just enjoys cooking fresh meals), then this might be a unique gift.  It’s a small, indoor, self-watering garden.

You get special plant pods designed just for the unit.  Then just fill it with water and it automatically dispenses the water as necessary and schedules the LED lighting.  There are a variety of different plants you can grow and it’s pretty foolproof.

The reservoir can hold enough water to last for an entire month so you can plug it in and forget it.  Until the plants get larger when you’ll need to adjust the height of the lighting to avoid burning the plants.  And it comes with the extension arm required to raise the lights.

The plant pods come with all the nutrients needed for their growth so no need to supplement.  And you get three basil plant pods with the kit to start.

I find this especially useful for an apartment or a room in a house where you don’t get a lot of natural light.  And it’s fun to see them grow!

4. TP-Link Kasa smart plugs

Turn any outlet into a smart plug

Do you love the idea of a smart home but don’t want the expense of rewiring everything?  These little plugs turn any outlet into a smart plug!

They function on a 2.4GHz wireless network so you don’t need to buy a separate hub.  And connected to wi-fi, you can control them from anywhere.

Using the Kasa Smart app you can program schedules to automatically switch any plug on or off.  They’re even compatible with Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Microsoft Cortana.  And that means you can control them by voice too!

They come in different sizes but these Lite versions can be “stacked”.  That way you can have both outlets in one receptacle using these smart plugs.

They’re pretty cool for such a small package.

5. iRobot Braava jet 240 Robot Mop

The next step beyond the Roomba

Do you remember when the Roomba first hit the scene?  I had one of the originals and it was great.  And now, there’s a version that can do your mopping too!

There are a few different models but this little 200 series model is perfect for kitchens and bathrooms – right where you would need it most.

It boasts a precision jet spray and also has vibrating cleaning heads to agitate that dirt away.  And it’s a pretty compact unit so it can navigate the tighter spaces in a bathroom.  It also has an “edging” feature to get into corners.

Like all the iRobot series it relies on an algorithm to determine the cleaning pattern for an area.  But then it learns and adapts for better cleaning.  So it may not be as fast as you would be, but it does the work for you.

It also responds to the standard iRobot virtual “wall mode” boundaries to contain it to the cleaning area you want.  And, of course, you can also now control it with a smartphone app.

6. Hercules Tuff Charging Station

Fast Charging for 6 devices at once

This is a pretty neat little station.  Basically, a “family” charging station to keep all your devices ready to go and in one place.  Although with all the devices we use these days, you may need more than one!

First of all, this is a serious counter space saver.  With this charging station, you can tidy a significant section of your kitchen counter from all the cords and scramble of devices.

It’s a little bit of organizational heaven.  Each device has a separate slot for charging so they stay organized and the devices won’t suffer damage from knocking against each other.

Each device slot has its own charging port and light.  When the light goes off, the device is fully charged.  Plus the station itself is designed to avoid overcharging.

The station comes with 6 compact charging cables but you can also use your own – they just won’t be compact and perfectly sized for the station.  Different stations come with different combinations of cables but the standard is 2 Apple Lightning cables, 2 Type-C cables, and 2 Micro-USB cables.

You can also buy additional packs of compact cables based on your devices.  And, the station even has a few different colour options to choose from.

Very organized.  Very efficient.  Sweet.

7. PetChatz Pawcall

All-in-one digital daycare for your pet

You’re probably wondering how I can possibly say this gift is related to organization or productivity.  Well, yes – it’s a bit of a stretch.  But if you’re at work and you’re completely sidetracked worrying about a new puppy or even destructive pet behaviour… then this device could help improve your focus.  See – I did it!  It’s a product for improved concentration. ?
This is a whole system of daycare for your pet which uses two components: PetChatz HD and PawCall.
PetChatz HD is a repository for pet treats and aromatherapy (yes, it’s true) but it’s also an HD video system with a motion detector.  It allows you to video chat with your pet and dispenses treats too.  But it’s a two-way system and that’s where the PawCall comes in.
The PawCall is basically a button for your pet.  When the pet activates it (steps on it, sits on it, etc.) it initiates a call to you through the PetChatz HD.  And then you can dispense a treat or calming scent through the PetChatz HD.
You use the PetChatz app to control the system and you can even take videos of cute things your pets do.  Both products are safe and chew-resistant.
So even our pets are getting into technology!

8. LARQ Bottle – Self-Cleaning Water Bottle

It’s also a purification system

This item is probably better suited to office use than for your home.  But it’s still pretty cool.

You want to be environmentally friendly so you use a reusable water bottle instead of buying bottled water.  But cleaning most water bottles is very difficult.  And that’s where LARQ comes in.

LARQ is promoted as the “World’s First Self-Cleaning Water Bottle.”  And it has some pretty cool features:

  1. Contains a portable digital purification system in the lid with long-lasting rechargeable batteries
  2. Lasts for one month on one USB charge
  3. USB is waterproof so outdoor use is fine
  4. Purifies water in 60 seconds – up to 99.99% of bacteria and viruses destroyed using UV-C light
  5. Purification is activated by tapping the bottle top – once for regular use and twice for “Adventure Mode”
  6. In the “Adventure Mode”, there’s extra purification performed
  7. Doesn’t require replacement filters
  8. It’s non-toxic, mercury-free, and BPA and plastic-free
  9. Activates itself every two hours to ensure your water (and your bottle) are odour free
  10. Maintains your cold beverage for 24 hours – or your hot beverage for 12 hours
  11. The bottle itself is super light

LARQ even donates a portion of the purchase price to 1% for the Planet – a non-profit network funding environmental organizations.  And it comes in a variety of colours.  Yay!
